Part One: Initial Consultation
Robin and his spouse decided it’s time to upgrade their home, and they started looking for contractors to start.
They found Gill Construction online, they got some referrals, read our reviews, and when they were ready, they contacted us.
They had a nice phone conversation with Annie from the office, and then we scheduled an in-home visit to see the actual scope of work.
We sit down, listened to their needs, their preferences, gave them some options, talked them through the process, and showed them what we can do.
During our in-home consultation, some of the things we noticed were...
Water damage
There were several leaks in the kitchen that led to mold, rust, and other damage to the framing.
Black tile grout
Black tile grout means water was oozing and it created mold and mildew on the tile grout, hence the color.
Not up to code
Both the electrical and plumbing installations were not up to code and could pose a serious hazard.
Looked dated
The old kitchen and dining space was giving the wrong feel. Robin and his spouse wanted a nicer space.
Framing issues
There were several framing issues, such as gaps between the ceiling panels like you see in this image.
Part Two: The Design, Planning, Permitting
Because this was a HUGE project, there was quite some planning to do. We had to pull permits for electrical, plumbing, and some new framing. We took care of everything, decided on the materials, and created the design.

Part Three: The Time Schedule
Robin and his spouse came to us on Feb 6th. It was the beginning of the year and they wanted to start planning this upgrade and get it over with. Here’s a quick breakdown of how it went…
March-April
In March and April we did most of the planning and design work after a couple of in-home visits. On April 26th, Robin got the first draft of the 3D renders.
Robin was doing part of this project through his home insurance, so we had to wait for the adjuster and all the paperwork with his carrier.
May
In May we had to wait for several new measurements and the new 3D renders. The homeowners had a hard time deciding on materials as well.
June
We started deciding on the last materials and finishes, placing orders, and getting the permits for electrical and plumbing.
July
We started demoing the old space, removing the flooring, the old cabinets, and installing the new cabinets at the end of July.
August
We installed the new flooring throughout the main floor, including kitchen, dining, family room, laundry room, and pantry.
The actual construction for this main floor remodel happened between July 15th and August 25th.
